Celebrating the 70th anniversary of SAS, as usual, with science!

On June 23 and 24, 2023, at M.R. Square Štefánik in Bratislava, the general public could join the spectacular celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak Academy of Sciences founding as part of the Weekend with SAS event. In more than 50 stands, scientific institutes of the SAS presented the best of their research interestingly and interactively. Both young and old science enthusiasts had a great time, thanks to the exciting exhibits of the SAS scientific teams and the accompanying program, culminating in a concert by the Korben Dallas band. Another interesting point in the program of this event was the filming of the scientific program RTVS Experiment with Gregor Mareš, the topic of which was what else, the SAS and its most significant achievements and challenges during the cross-section of the 70 years of its existence.
The Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics SAS, which also celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, could not miss this pleasant popularization event. In addition to the results of scientific research of our institute, such as the process and products of aluminum foam or the development of a superconductor based on MgB2 with an Al-based shell, we also presented the process of powder metallurgy in a playful way using our "miraculous" Sugar Factory. Little promissing scientists could press out candy of colored sugar in a sugar press, i.e., a powdered pressing; then, the more patient ones could also bake it in the prepared oven. Subsequently, after cooling the product, they could find out how the form and structure of the material changed or why and in which cases this product manufacturing process is suitable. Based on the wide-open eyes of curious and enthusiastic children, we believe that we have aroused the interest of children and students in science and research even more with this playful form.
