Scientific Seminar at the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics SAS: Sharing Experiences from Research Internship

On October 21, 2024, a scientific seminar was held on the premises of our institute. The scientific workers of the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics of the Slovac Academy of Sciences, who had returned from foreign research internships, spoke at the seminar.

Research internships are, so to speak, mandatory equipment for every serious scientist because they give them access to new technologies, trends, or scientific procedures that may not be available in their home environment. Cooperation with leading foreign universities and research centres provides a unique opportunity to establish new contacts and represent SAS and research in Slovakia.

At the seminar, our three colleagues presented their experiences and projects they are working on:

  • Dr Štefan Nagy, worked at RHP-Technology GmbH, Forschungs- und Technologiezentrum A-2444 Seibersdorf Austria under the leadership of DI Lilla Vály Head of PIM/3D printing Group. Research by Dr Nagy was focused on creating porous preformed materials for liquid metal infusion to create composite ceramic and metal materials using multiple 3D printing technologies.

  • Dr Ľubomír Orovčík, worked at the University of Waterloo, Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, 200 University Avenue West, Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.Dr. Orovčík collaborated with other researchers in the welding laboratory, as well as in the optical and scanning electron microscopy laboratories. His research focused on optimization of welding parameters and monitoring of the welding process, defects, and characterization of porosity.

  • Dr Farnoush Salehtash presented her plans and research focus at the institute. Dr. Salehtash completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of Physics SAS in August 2024 and currently holds a postdoc position at the Division of Microstructure of Surfaces and Interfaces. Under the leadership of Dr. Alena Opálková Šišková she is working on a project to develop new sensors from biochar. The project has already received a patent application.

The scientific seminar aimed at sharing experiences and provided a unique opportunity to inspire other colleagues to engage in similar research activities, which have the potential to strengthen relations between our institution and foreign partners.
