Ing. Martin Nosko, PhD. the new director of the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics, Slovak Academy of Sciences

Ing. Martin Nosko, PhD. graduated at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology in Trnava of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, in 2002. During his engineering studies, he completed the Work and Travel program in the USA and, upon the graduation, the Work and Travel program combined with studies in Australia.

In 2003, he started his PhD. study at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology STU. The scientific part of the PhD. study he completed at the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he also worked part-time and participated in work on scientific projects of the institute, during the study. During his study, he completed the Internship program at Microflow Technologies and HAN University of Applied Sciences in Arnhem, Netherlands. He defended his doctoral dissertation on Reproducibility of the properties of aluminum foams in 2010.

After defending his dissertation in 2010, he joined the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics, Slovak Academy of Sciences as a full-time researcher. As a researcher, he participated in the solution of national and international scientific and industrial projects focused on the development of new materials, in which he was responsible for microstructural analysis of materials using electron microscopy and development of sample preparation methods for scanning electron microscopy.
In 2015, he was awarded the scientific qualification level of senior researcher. During this period, in addition to his own scientific work, he also engaged in establishing cooperation with the academic, university and industrial spheres and coordinating scientific and industrial projects focused on the development of new materials.

In 2017, he was appointed head of the Division of Microstructure of Surfaces and Interfaces, which is one of the three scientific divisions of the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics, Slovak Academy of Sciences. His good communication skills, team spirit, non-conflict as well as ability to think strategically in the division development were demonstrated in leading a team of researchers and doctoral students.

Ing. Martin Nosko, PhD. is the author of a number of scientific papers with a significant impact in the scientific community. He holds five domestic and one foreign awards. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Scientific Board of the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and a member of Commission no. 7 of Scientific Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He is the vice-president of the Society for New Materials and Technologies - SNMT, n.o. and the chairman of the civic association All4Science, o.z. aimed at popularizing science.

On November 20, 2020, based on the results of the selection procedure, the President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences appointed Ing. Martin Nosko, PhD. as director of the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, with effect from December 1, 2020.
