The metal matrix composites MMCs are of prime interest in space related activities. However, MMCs have not been satisfactorily developed yet for complex shape lightweight components bearing mechanical thermal and environmental loads due to weak and instable interfaces. The main objective of this project is to develop a novel metal matrix composite, which does not suffer from interfacial problems. The composite will be made of technically pure magnesium which will be reinforced with carbon fibres, whereas satisfactory interfacial bonding will be established via suitable carbide forming elements during reaction infiltration – the unique technique developed by ÚMMS SAV, recently. The development of the material will be accompanied with detailed microstructural investigations and systematic testing.
