The Zero Debris Charter: A New Era in the Fight Against Space Debris

From 05 to 06.09.2024, our colleague Dr. Naďa Beronská participated in the prestigious international fair Innovation and Leadership in Aerospace (ILA) in Berlin. The fair is focused on sustainability, new technologies, and innovations in the aviation industry. The entire aviation and space industry chain was represented at the fair, which was divided into the aviation, aerospace, defense and support, advanced air mobility, and supplier sectors.

At this prestigious exhibition, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director of Operations Rolf Densing, ESA Astronaut (retired) Thomas Reiter, and BDLI Vice President Marco R. Fuchs officially presented the Zero Debris Charter.

The Zero Debris Charter represents the world's most ambitious space debris mitigation and remediation vision. This important document was developed by more than 40 experts in an open and collaborative process led by the European Space Agency (ESA) Protect accelerator.

After it was signed by the responsible ministers and leaders of the space sector from 12 countries, the ESA-EU Space Council meeting took place in May 2024. Subsequently, a ceremony was held during which representatives of industry, academia and the non-profit sector from Europe and other countries signed the cooperation agreement for the first time. With this act, they reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the international community to the long-term sustainability of space activities, instilling a sense of assurance and confidence in the future of space exploration.

Dr. Naďa Beronská signed this fundamental charter on behalf of IMMM SAS at this prestigious event. The Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics SAS is actively involved in researching and developing advanced technologies for capturing and recycling space debris. This important initiative, which has the potential to significantly influence future generations, inspires us to develop space research at our institute.
